Cupcake Queen and Stephen King

Last Saturday when Sarah and I met at Barnes and Noble to start this blog, I saw a local author, Heather Hepler signing copies of her books. I bought her latest one, The Cupcake Queen, and had a delightful conversation with her. I confessed to her that I am a "wannabe" writer and she recommended I read Stephen King's book On Writing. She said it was the best book she had read on the craft. So I bought that one too.
I finished The Cupcake Queen on Saturday night and On Writing last night. I have bought many books on "how to write" and I have to agree with Heather--King's is the best! It reads like a memoir and it is full of practical advice. Whether you like Stephen King's fiction or not, he is one prolific writer! His book was very inspirational and made me want to sit down and really give this fiction writing thing a try! Not horror or suspense. More like the YA fiction that Heather Hepler writes.
The Cupcake Queen is a funny, often poignant story of friendship and belonging. It has it all---mean girls, a romance, heartbreak and small town fun and lots of cupcakes. The characters, most of them, are teenagers you'd like to know. The Cupcake Queen is a delicious read!

It was a pop-up version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears--the kind where some of the characters moved when you turned the page.  That is my first memory of reading.  I had heard my mother read it to me so much that I could recite the book back to her by memory all along thinking I was reading.  Wisely, my mother did not tell me otherwise, but she praised me for being able to read!  That is the moment I first fell in love with reading and books.  I still have a soft spot for the three bears!

One of the Books I Love

The Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan is one of the young adult fiction books that I truly loved reading. My family just returned from the movie, and I remember the joy of reading this book the very first time. Reading this book was magical and adventurous. I loved the main character whose ADHD and dyslexia served as strengths, and I liked getting reacquainted with Greek mythology. It is just a fun book to read no matter what age you are, and I think I will re-read this one!
