Cupcake Queen and Stephen King

Last Saturday when Sarah and I met at Barnes and Noble to start this blog, I saw a local author, Heather Hepler signing copies of her books. I bought her latest one, The Cupcake Queen, and had a delightful conversation with her. I confessed to her that I am a "wannabe" writer and she recommended I read Stephen King's book On Writing. She said it was the best book she had read on the craft. So I bought that one too.
I finished The Cupcake Queen on Saturday night and On Writing last night. I have bought many books on "how to write" and I have to agree with Heather--King's is the best! It reads like a memoir and it is full of practical advice. Whether you like Stephen King's fiction or not, he is one prolific writer! His book was very inspirational and made me want to sit down and really give this fiction writing thing a try! Not horror or suspense. More like the YA fiction that Heather Hepler writes.
The Cupcake Queen is a funny, often poignant story of friendship and belonging. It has it all---mean girls, a romance, heartbreak and small town fun and lots of cupcakes. The characters, most of them, are teenagers you'd like to know. The Cupcake Queen is a delicious read!
